GILE 2027 kicks off its launch campaign, setting the stage for one of the lighting industry’s most influential trade platforms. As the global lighting sector continues to move beyond traditional illumination, new opportunities are emerging across smart living, AIoT connectivity, human-centric lighting, low-carbon development, smart cities, cultural tourism, display technology and integrated building applications. In response to these evolving trends, the event will focus on how lighting can create greater value across diverse application scenarios and support the industry’s transformation towards intelligent, sustainable and experience-driven solutions.
Reflecting on the 2027 show framework, Ms Lucia Wong, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, shared: “No longer defined by products alone, the lighting industry is increasingly shaped by emerging applications and cross-sector collaboration. Through six specialised lighting application ecosystems, the upcoming edition will connect stakeholders across the entire value chain, from manufacturers and technology providers to designers, system integrators, and end users. Presenting lighting through real application scenarios, GILE aims to help these partners collaborate, explore new business models, and unlock growth in emerging markets.”
Six ecosystems, countless business opportunities
The fair’s six dedicated application ecosystems will provide a practical framework for the industry to capture growth opportunities, expand application markets and strengthen the role of lighting as a driver of intelligent, sustainable and experience-led development. Visitors will be able to explore these spaces first-hand across the fairground’s two main areas.
Area A will showcase the latest advancements in exterior applications, demonstrating how cutting-edge technologies are actively reshaping outdoor environments:
- The tourism lighting application ecosystem: Blends technology, art, and cultural tourism, through immersive landscape lighting, dynamic interactive projections, and dazzling stage effects. Together, these innovations redefine how historic buildings and regional landmarks come alive after dark, setting a new standard for the development of the night economy.
- The low-carbon and smart lighting ecosystem: Integrates IoT and AI to power coordinated, city-wide lighting systems that automatically adjust to foot traffic and seasonal shifts, reducing energy consumption while enhancing public safety and urban beautification.
- The bio-optics and smart agriculture lighting ecosystem: Focuses on lighting technologies that interact directly with biological systems and controlled production environments.
- The AI lighting ecosystem: Combines AI algorithms, sensors, smart drivers, and connected control systems and building platforms to analyse real-time occupancy, daylight, user behaviour, and energy use, automatically adjusting brightness, colour temperature, and lighting scenes. For manufacturers, control/chip suppliers, software developers, and system integrators, this shift beyond standard luminaires unlocks service-based revenue streams through intelligent platforms, data services, energy optimization, and customised applications.Emotional spaces: Light that comforts
Area A will also spotlight the upstream technologies and intelligent manufacturing driving the industry forward. These halls will showcase the complete supply chain, from LED chips and packaging through to mass production, demonstrating how advanced equipment and process optimisation improve efficiency, product consistency, and overall competitiveness. Key exhibits will feature the latest LED chip technologies, particularly Mini/Micro-LED and full-spectrum chips, alongside LED drivers, power supplies, integrated circuits, controllers, electronic and optical components, lenses, and packaged modules. From the production cycle, this area will also present LED packaging production equipment, raw materials, measuring instruments and testing systems essential for scalable, quality-controlled manufacturing.
Bridging the gap between manufacturing and end-use, visitors of Area A can expect to see how these upstream innovations enable advanced applications, such as Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) solutions that use adaptive controls and full-spectrum technology to support personalised, comfortable, and health-oriented environments.
Area B offers a closer look at interior applications, placing a strong emphasis on human-centric architectural design. Visitors can explore the seamless integration of aesthetics, well-being, and smart technology across diverse indoor environments, including:
- Residential lighting application ecosystem: Integrates AI-adaptive controls with full-spectrum lighting to create personalised living environments. Utilising low-carbon, recyclable materials, it demonstrates how smart home lighting balances health, aesthetics, and sustainability.
- Commercial lighting application ecosystem: Positions commercial lighting as a smart-driven growth engine with self-learning capabilities. Through real-time responses to foot traffic, timing, and daylight, these systems boost office efficiency and intuitively guide consumer flow in retail spaces.
Beyond these ecosystems, Area B will feature dedicated halls for lighting fixture design, reflecting the market's growing demand for design integration, intelligent control, energy efficiency, sustainability and architectural compatibility. Key exhibits will highlight the emerging trends shaping residential, commercial, and public spaces, including minimalist aesthetics, modular structures, precision optics, glare control, tuneable white and full-spectrum technologies, smart dimming, and low-carbon materials. Pairing these innovations with scenario-based applications will support companies in enhancing product value, expanding application markets and capturing growth opportunities across both functional and decorative lighting segments.
Uniting the industry for a brighter tomorrow
As the lighting industry enters a new phase of intelligent, application-driven development, the 32nd edition of GILE will continue to serve as a vital platform connecting technology, design, and market demand. By framing products within their real-world application environments, the exhibition helps industry players understand evolving user needs, identify new growth areas, and accelerate the adoption of innovative solutions. Through its continued focus on cross-sector collaboration and business opportunity development, GILE 2027 extends its legacy of connection, discovery, and innovation to enhance the way people live, work and experience spaces in a rapidly changing global market.
The Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition and Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology (GEBT) will be held concurrently. Both shows are part of Messe Frankfurt’s Light + Building Technology fairs headed by the biennial “Light + Building” event. The next edition will be held from 5 – 10 March 2028 in Frankfurt, Germany.
Messe Frankfurt organises several trade fairs for the light and building technology sectors in Asia, including International Smart Space Exhibition, Shanghai Intelligent Building Technology, Shanghai Smart Home Technology and Parking China. The company’s lighting and building technology trade fairs also cover the markets in Argentina, India, Türkiye, the UAE and the US.
